Published: 2024 • By Coronado Tree Farm
Proper planting and early care are critical to the long-term health and beauty of your new tree. Follow these steps for the best results.
Before Planting
- Choose a location with appropriate sun exposure and space for the mature tree
- Call 811 to mark underground utilities before digging
- Water the tree thoroughly in its container before planting
Planting Steps
- Dig a hole 2-3 times wider than the root ball but no deeper
- Remove the container and gently loosen circling roots
- Place the tree so the root flare is at or slightly above ground level
- Backfill with native soil, watering as you fill to eliminate air pockets
- Apply 2-4 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk
First Year Care
- Watering: Deep water 1-2 times per week during the growing season
- Mulching: Maintain a 3-4 foot diameter mulch ring
- Staking: Only if necessary, and remove after one year
- Pruning: Remove only dead or damaged branches the first year
